Dr. Robert Schleip
Just how important is fascia, the connective tissue of the body?
Look at it this way. There are 100 trillion cells in the body – and the bodywide fascial network is what binds them all together.
Fascia is the biomechanical environment all your cells live within. And importantly, it is not just an inert biological material.
Fascia is a sensory organ. It is filled with millions of mechanoreceptors that listen to everything you do.
And importantly? What happens in the fascia doesn’t just stay in the fascia.
Our central nervous system receives its greatest amount of sensory input from myofascial tissues.
Fascia responds to everything you do – what you do, how you move, and how you feel emotionally. Your fascial matrix is shaped every moment of the day by what you do and how you feel.
And researchers now believe that fascia forms the basis for proprioception and interoception.
Interoception is a fancy word for those sensations we often refer to as our sixth sense.
Learning to tune in to those sensations can open a whole new way of listening to your body and your sixth sense, says Dr. Robert Schleip.
